First Hydrogen Power Plant Was Put into Operation in Italy

Italy’s largest energy producer – Enel Company put into operation a hydrogen power plant, which does not emit any greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This unique plant is located in Porto-Margera, Venice’s industrial suburb. The capcity of the plant equals to 12 MW, its operation is based on hydrogen supplied by petrochemical plant Polimeri Europa. The amount electricity generated by the hydrogen plant is sufficient to cover the needs of approximately 20 thousand of families. Thanks to the construction of this plant the carbon dioxide emissions will reduce by 17 tons per year. The construction of the plant is a part of Enel’s 5-year plan related to the utilization of renewable energy sources, the implementation of which started in 2006. The hydrogen power plant was built within the framework of Hydrogen Park project, providing the research and development in the field of hydrogen energy and investing €7.4 billion into green energy sources by 2012.
